Starter
Dragon Dance
Listen carefully to the music. Do you know which country this music is from?
The Chinese have different animals to represent each year: Rat, Ox, Tiger, Rabbit, Dragon, Snake, Horse, Goat, Monkey, Rooster, Dog and Pig. What types of movements do these animals use?
Warm up
Dragon Dance
Skip or run around the space. When the teacher calls out the name of an animal, freeze in the appropriate shape.
Repeat for the various animals.
Main
- Choose three of your favourite animal shapes and put them together as a move.
Model high-quality moves: e.g. high & low, snake-like, scary, large moves, etc.
Dragon Dance
Find a partner. Teach your moves to your partner and learn theirs.
Encourage children to explore their movements using helpful hints: e.g. snake-like movement, make claws, lift, dip, push forwards, sweep the head, power, frightening but friendly, bold, etc.
- Half the class at a time, watch as the other performs what they have come up with in their pairs. Discuss the movement used.
- Talk about the Chinese dragon and how many people make one large dragon that moves through the streets.
- As a whole class, create a huge Chinese dragon (using one or two single-file lines). How high and low can your dragon go as it travels around the space?
Cool Down
Slow-Mo
Move around the space using your own dragon movements. Move now as though your dragon is calming the weather. What sort of calming dragon movements can you create?
